While the word “rupture” suggests a dramatic problem or impasse in the working relationship between patient and therapist, alliance ruptures can include more subtle strains or slight disagreements that can serve as early warning signs and provide valuable opportunities for therapists to intervene.  This workshop will draw on research on alliance ruptures to present and illustrate examples of confrontation ruptures (movements against) and withdrawal ruptures (movements away).  We will discuss how therapists can use both interpersonal markers–behaviors that they observe in their patients and themselves—as well as intrapersonal markers—their own internal experience—to help them identify when a rupture may be occurring.
