B: FULLTEGNET - EMDR for treating traumatic attachment in Dissociative Disorders
Beskrivelse

The sense of safety that leads to the development, in a child, of adaptive emotion-regulation abilities and a healthy view of self and the world is a direct consequence of the quality of the attachment that caregivers are able to provide.

In a secure relationship, the caregiver’s behavior is predictable and stable. When the child needs comfort and reassurance, caregivers are available and able to recognize and respond in a coherent way to the child’s needs, providing reassurance, support, and sense of safety. In this type of environment, children can see themselves as worthy of love and support and learn that it is okay to ask for help and rely on others.

In contrast, children who grow up with a caregiver whose behavior is confusing, unpredictable or sometimes traumatizing, have difficulty establishing a consistent view of the caregiver and of themselves. The parent is a source of both safety and danger, which often generates an experience of inner conflict and disorganized responses to fear or distress. In these cases, norms are unclear and children may not understand what makes them a “good” child or a “bad” child. The way in which they are viewed and treated cannot be understood since it has to do with the caregiver´s difficulties, not with the actions of the child.

In this workshop, we will learn how traumatic attachment develops when children must adapt their responses to an unpredictable and often changing environment. These survival strategies often lead to the development of a fragmented and conflicted sense of self. We will see the common difficulties that interfere with treatment and how to understand and address them from an EMDR perspective.
